Careers in Colour #3: Empowering diversity in the workplace

Meet CiC member Bec and check out new plans, resources and events near you

Bec has been a member of CiC since February 2022. In this edition, we spoke with Bec about her experience working in the DEI space and some of her reflections.

“I want to see a future where there is increased representation of culturally diverse leadership and inclusion at all levels across Australian workplaces.”

Hi Bec, could you tell us about your role and responsibilities as a core member of Careers In Colour?

I primarily oversee the marketing and community streams, which includes managing our social media presence, external communications such as our website and brand, and offering assistance in communication efforts for events. However, as a small team, we work well in being agile and supporting each other across various initiatives and projects we have in CiC.

Why did you join Careers in Colour?

I joined CiC to help be part of the change I want to see - a future where there is increased representation of culturally diverse leadership and inclusion at all levels across Australian workplaces.

Can you share a particularly impactful moment or experience from your work with Careers In Colour?

One of my favourite experiences to date was our Tech in Colour event held in Sydney. This was the first time that we were able to bring our community together to build connections and share insights in person. Hearing all the great conversations and seeing people bond and connect over shared experiences was a really great reminder of why we do what we do.

How do you recharge and stay motivated, considering both your volunteer work and your day job?

Juggling multiple projects and activities on the go has helped me be more intentional with my time, and part of this is ensuring I block out time for rest and activities I enjoy. This includes carving out time for F45, running, trying new activities and catching up with loved ones. I’m also lucky to be surrounded teams which have fostered a culture of mutual support and care, readily extending a helping hand whenever it’s needed.
