Careers in Colour #1: Welcome!
Careers in Colour supports people of colour as they enter and progress in their careers. Our newsletter captures our reflections and promotes upcoming events and opportunities for POC 💌
💡 Reflecting on our ‘Tech in Colour’ event
A few months ago, we ran an our first in-person event (!!) about the experiences of POC in the tech industry. Thanks so much to everyone that attended. A few quick reflections from our team on the stories shared by our amazing panellists:
Companies need to see DEI as more than a number. Tech companies, and organisations more broadly, often will see DEI as a number. But it needs to be so much more - for example, by investing in the psychological safety of staff, thinking about how products are built in a way that is inclusive and recognises bias, and investing in tools across the entire hiring process.
Career sponsors are so important. What’s a sponsor? Sometimes there’s a blurred line between a good leader, friend and sponsor. Sponsors are people that will have your back and look for opportunities to lift you up throughout your career.
Think of your career as a ship that you’re the captain of. 🚢 Thinking about your career this way can be liberating - it gives you the space and agency to pursue what you are curious about. If something doesn’t seem right for you, you can always steer the ship somewhere else.
📸 Check out some pics from the event below. We’re continuing our series of panel events across different industries this year - let us know what you want to see!
🗓 Are you involved in an employee network at work that supports cultural diversity? Careers in Colour are exploring an opportunity to bring together people involved in employee networks so they can connect and share their learnings. Get in touch with us via LinkedIn or email us at careersincolour@gmail.com if you want to learn more or get involved.
Want to connect with other POC in tech? Our friends at the Creative Co-Operative are running an event on Thurs 13 July at Canva HQ in Surry Hills about start ups and tech specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Black and Women of Colour and non-binary people. Get your tickets here.
If you want more networking opps in tech - check out an upcoming BeerOps event in July here if you’re keen.
Looking for inspiration to run a POC sponsorship program at work? NSW Public Service Commissioner Kathrina Lo launched a new sponsorship program ‘Elevate & Advocate’ for culturally and linguistically diverse NSW public sector employees. Read about their strategy here.
